The trailer of Sushant Singh Rajput and Bhumi Pednekar‘s upcoming film, Sonchiriya is out. It is a crime drama set in 1975 Chambal valley. The film also stars Ashutosh Rana, Manoj Bajpayee and Ranvir Shorey in pivotal roles. The movie is directed by Abhishek Chaubey of Udta Punjab and Ishqiya fame and is a completely fictionalized account of Chambal region during the 1975 Emergency.
Talking to a news channel about the movie, Abhishek Chaubey told, “Bandits have been around for ages. They are criminals but it’s a huge tradition — their society and life. There are so many layers to it. Why they were the way they were why they were bandits but they called themselves rebels so what was it that motivated them to live like that. It’s a part of our history and culture and I’m really shocked that we’re not telling more stories about them. In the West, it’s an established genre which is still being explored.”
The actors went to great lengths for the movie. While Sushant reportedly interacted with a few former dacoits from Chambal for the project, Bhumi did a rigorous training to get her character to perfection. As per DNA,
“Bhumi chose dusty suburban fields to swanky gyms as her training ground and her workout regime included walking with buckets filled with water on her head under the boiling sun, sweeping and cleaning floors, walking barefoot in dusty fields and lanes, grinding wheat, among other rigorous household chores that rural women in India do.”
