The first woman to represent India in New York at the UN is Ruchira Kamboj. On August 3, the diplomat announced the information on Instagram, writing in the caption, “I have handed my credentials to the Secretary General of the United Nations @antonioguterres as Permanent Representative/Ambassador to the United Nations.”
She continued, “A privilege to be the first Indian woman to hold this post.” She wrote, “To the girls out there, we can all make it,” encouraging all women.

Ruchira Kamboj: Who Is She?
Before taking on her new position as India’s ambassador to the UN, Kamboj, an Indian diplomat in the Indian Foreign Service, served as the country’s high commissioner to South Africa. She was also India’s first female ambassador to Bhutan and the country’s permanent representative to UNESCO in Paris.
She was the batch 1987 All India Women’s Civil Services Topper as well as the Foreign Service Topper.
Between 1989 to 1991, she started her journey from Paris where she worked as the Third Secretary in the Indian Embassy to France. She also worked at the Indian Embassy in France as the second secretary.
Kamboj served as the Under Secretary in the India Ministry of External Affairs’ Europe West Division from 1991 to 1996, where she handled issues pertaining to the UK, Italy, France, the BENELUX, Portugal, and Spain.
The diplomat served as the First Secretary and Head of Chancery at the Indian High Commission in Port Louis, Mauritius, from 1996 to 1999. (water sports in Mauritius).
From 1999 to 2002, Kamboj served as the Ministry of External Affairs’ Deputy Secretary and Director of Foreign Service Personnel and Cadre after moving back to New Delhi. She was one of the ambassadors who had held this position the longest.
Special Assignment For Narendra Modi’s Inauguration
In 2014, Kamboj was invited as part of a special assignment to the swearing-in ceremony of politician Narendra Modi’s first term as India’s prime minister. She returned to Paris to carry out her duties there.
The first female chief of protocol
She was the first and only woman to hold the office of Chief of Protocol for India. She was in charge of planning the foreign trips of the then-Indian Prime Minister, President, Vice President, and External Affairs Minister from 2011 to 2014.
Began “Weaves of Benaras”
In the months of August and October 2015, Kamboj debuted a unique initiative known as “Weaves of Benaras.” Its goal was to present Varanasi’s spiritual city’s intricate and incredibly rich traditional art forms.
As a diplomat, Kamboj has presided over a number of significant posts and major projects. She is a role model for all women in India.
