Ever since Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas surprised their fans with a surprise wedding the night after the Billboard Music Awards by eloping to Las Vegas, the fans have been perturbed by the question as to why the duo decided to get married in Vegas the way they did.
With an Elvis impersonator as the officiant, Ring Pops for wedding bands, and Diplo as wedding DJ, the impromptu festivities fit the couple’s carefree personalities.
But as it turns out, the wedding was for legal purposes too. As we all know that the couple is going to have a big wedding in France.
“We had to do a legal marriage before we did a real big one,”
Joe said in a special men’s edition of BAZAAR.com, and confirmed that the ceremony was done for legal purposes.
“It was either the courthouse, or our version, and I preferred our version. Friends, Elvis, and Ring Pops,” added Joe.
Earlier this year, the 29 years old singer had told in a statement that he and Sophie Turner were planning on a summer wedding, and according to recent reports, it’s expected to take place in France. There lies the problem and the reason for the couple’s impromptu wedding for legal purposes.
As per the U.S. Embassy in France, a religious ceremony in the country “does not constitute a legal marriage.” In case the ceremony happens in France, the person officiating the ceremony will be required to provide a marriage certificate in order to prove that the civil ceremony has already taken place.
Well, that explains why Joe and Sophie eloped after Billboard Music Awards and married in a jiffy! We couldn’t be happier for the couple.
