Sabyasachi Mukherjee is one of the most iconic designers in India. Be it Deepika, Priyanka or Anushka, celebrities love Sabyasachi’s creations so much that when it comes to ethnic wear, their unanimous choice is Sabya.
We all know that Sabyasachi also launched his line of jewellery. But do you know what prompted him to do that? In a recent interaction with
Imran Amad and Deepika Padukone in Soho House, Mumbai, Sabya spilled the beans on what triggered him to start his own jewelry line. As it turns out, Vidya Balan’s Cannes debacle and her subsequent fallout with the designer is the reason. Sabha says,
“I remember, when I had the big debacle with “Vidya Balan at Cannes, I went to a senior fashion editor and said that there is only that much that you can control, because of the facts that there are stylists and then shit happens. She was like, ‘no, shit doesn’t happen. When you are giving an outfit to somebody you are responsible for the whole image, you have to own up to that responsibility’. So then I decided that slowly slowly I will start controlling that entire image. So after jewellery we will get into beauty, then other things.”
For the unversed, about 6 years ago, Vidya made an appearance at Cannes clad in a Sabyasachi saree. Her outfit faced strong backlash with critics labeling her look as dull and boring.
After that, the actress nerve wore Sabyasachi. She was once quoted saying,
“I think Sabyasachi is one of the most talented designers in the country. I have worn him a lot but post Cannes (pauses)… I don’t know if I can call it a fallout, but we have not been in touch. Not that anything has happened, but… it’s unfortunate.”
