The new Miss Universe 2021 is Harnaaz Sandhu from India. The 21-year-old Chandigarh model was crowned the Miss Universe 2021 on 12 December 2021, at the 70th Miss Universe competition held at Universe Dome in Eilat, Israel. Harnaaz will bring home the Miss Universe crown after 21 years. Before her, Lara Dutta was crowned the Miss Universe in 2000.
Sandhu was presented the crown by Andrea Meza, former Miss Universe 2020 from Mexico at the event which was live-streamed globally. She beat out 79 other contestants from various countries and territories including runner-up Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira and second runner-up Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane to claim the prestigious title.
“Chak De Phatte,” she said after winning the title for India after 21 years.
On qualifying for the top 2 rounds, the 21-year-old was asked, “What advice would you give to young women on how to deal with the pressures they face today?”
To which Harnaaz replied, “The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that are happening worldwide. Come out, speak for yourself, because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own. I believed in myself, and that is why I am standing here today.”
Harnaaz Sandhu previously been crowned Miss Diva 2021 and became the third Indian woman to be crowned Miss Universe. Harnaaz was also the winner of Times Fresh Face Miss Chandigarh 2017, Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018 and Femina Miss India Punjab 2019.
