Fashion Trends To Look out for in 2014

2013 witnessed some remarkable style trends that were seen across all boards – high street and high end, both in the national and international fashion circuits.

As we bid adieu to the year let us take a sneak peek into the top five trends predictions to help you update our wardrobes for Spring/Summer 2014.

1. MOLTEN METALLICS

While metallics can be seen on runways no matter what season it is, we’re not talking about anodyne gold, silver or bronze. Think cool holographics but on a myriad of textures and finish. Although, if this trend is a little too much for you, try to add a space age shaded accessory (like a clutch or sunglasses) to your spring/summer outfit to make a bold statement.

Look at Christopher Kane, Stella McCartney, Antonio Berardi, Phillip Lim, and Jimmy Choo for trend inspiration.

2. PLEATS

An exciting take on our everyday school-girl skirts, pleats are a must wear this spring. Choose from gauzy layers, box pleats inverted pleats which only show when you walk, corrugated pleats, or ones that flare out at the knee if you’re worried about pleats drawing all the attention to large hips. Very feminine and cool, this trend is suitable for both work and play as it’s adds structure to any outfit.

Look at Chloe, Fendi, Michael Kors, and Jonathan Saunders for trend inspiration.

3. SHIRT DRESSING

Shirts, by far, are the only style trend that designers and fashion aficionados refuse to discard season after season. And rightly so. They’re simple, versatile, and can be dresses up or down as you please. A white shirt is a wardrobe essential and this spring/summer will see a spin on the classic trend tailored in different cuts and patterns. Throw on a shirt dress or wear a shirt with a stand-out-skirt for a sophisticate yet chic look.

Look at Hermes, Acne, DKNY and Christian Dior for trend inspiration

4. 3D FLORALS

To talk about spring/summer trends and not have florals on the list is almost impossible, and this year is no different. As it often happens with repeated trends, they easily fall prey to clichés, S/S 2014 bring us a fresh take on florals, primarily 3D florals with delicate and pretty blossoms that are neither gaudy or junglee and embroidered, appliqued, or applied to the surface.

Look at Miu Miu, Dolce and Gabbana, Marni, French Connection and Burberry for trend inspiration.

5. SPORT MIX

With Rihanna and Rita Ora sporting tough and sexy street/sport inspired garments, this trend is going to be a big win as it rides high on comfort and wearability. Another reason why this track and field trend will gain momentum this season is because most people already have some prior experience with the trend and it can easily be achieved with minimal effort. We’re talking silk finished tracks, spring/summer inspired sweatshirts, and so on.

Look at Gucci, Pucci, DKNY and ASOS for trend inspiration.

That said, lace and pastels will continue to find a way into 2014’s S/S collections though in a slightly different avatar – with lace being worked into a darker colour palette and pastels becoming colour washed and seen in more sugary shades
