The Peplum Dress – Is It For You?

0

So I had been eyeing that gorgeous red peplum dress at the nearest fashion store for the past few days and ended up have a lot of ‘if’s’ and ‘buts’ in my mind, the most obvious being, ‘will it flatter my figure or create a havoc for it?’ Peplum dresses and tops look really classy, but they are certainly not meant for everyone! Hence, here is a Know It All on peplums for you!

What is a Peplum?

A peplum is a wide ruffle attached to the waist of the dress (or even tops or skirts).  It gives the dress a little retro, a very classy and somewhat elegant touch.

First Spotted

These dresses were quite popular among the upper class women of Europe during the early 1930’s and 1940’s. They later made a comeback in Hollywood during the 1980’s. Back in those days, these dresses were worn on formal occasions like business meetings, funerals, weddings and so on. They made a sudden and a stunning comeback in 2012 and have been a popular favorite ever since.

Peplum’s Body Type

They say when life gives you curves, flaunt them! The peplum looks awesome on those who are heavy at the hip and narrow on the top. You know the peplum is meant for you if you have the Pear Shaped body. Since this body type has a beautifully defined waistline the ruffle around it works wonders. It helps to draw attention on those curvy buttocks and hides the belly at the same time. However a lot of fashion experts believe it works well for the Hourglass Shape too. But if you have a small hip you must avoid wearing this as it would draw attention to this less curvy and not-so-sexy part of your body.

Styling Tips

  • Buy a solid coloured peplum dress. If you have a peplum top or a skirt, team them up with contrasting colours. Do not go for bold prints as they kill the beauty of the peplum.
  • Keep it simple. If you have to accessorize, a chunky bracelet or neckpiece would do. Remember, the beauty of this dress is in its simplicity.
  • You can add a very slim waist belt if you wish. A blingy belt can be a wonderful accessory if you have that really sexy waistline that you wanna flaunt. However, if your belt is blingy, you don’t need any other accessory really. Metallic chain link belts work wonders.
  •  Since this dress has a retro feel, winged eyeliners will go best with it. If your dress is a monochrome or a plain black or a plain white, do up your lips in bright red. If your dress is red, keep your lips nude and eyes winged.
  • Do up your hair in a messy bun. If you can carry a bouffant, nothing like it.  A little puff on the top and a pony tail behind would work well too.
  • Carry a small clutch. If your accessory is simple, keep the clutch studded or embellished but preferably in pastel shade.
  • Make sure that the ruffle of your peplum is neither too wide nor too narrow. Too wide a ruffle will make you look fat while thin ruffles just kill the entire look.
  • Lastly, put on high heeled pump shoes or stilettos. Go for pencil heels only as they create a sharp appearance, wedges do not work for peplums.

Celebs who rock the Peplum

Kim Kardashian: She has the ultimate voluptuous body and the peplum works best for her curves.

Aishwarya Rai Bacchan: The former miss world flaunted a champagne coloured floor length one shoulder peplum dress from Elie Saab’s Spring Couture at one of the many events at Cannes in 2011 and got big ups from the fashion fraternity.

Parineeti Chopra: This curvy babe has the peplum working wonders for her. She is often spotted in solid coloured peplum dresses or skirts well contrasted with plain tops.

Rihanna: This sexy singer often teams up her peplum with gorgeous belts that accentuate her slim waist.

Sonam Kapoor: Do we even need to talk about this fashionista who can carry perfectly just about anything she wears! We particularly heart the Jelin George floral print peplum skirt that she wore at the L’oreal Paris Femina Women Awards 2012, one of her very first appearances in the gorgeous peplum.
