Winter is an ideal season for travel. For people living in Mumbai, it is the perfect time to explore and climb the forts around the city. The weather is pleasant, the sun is mild, and unlike the monsoon, there is no rain or slippery path while trekking. That is why winter is ideal for visiting nearby forts, hill forts, and temples located at higher altitudes. It is also a great opportunity to learn about the history of these places. Walking and climbing steps are healthy habits for both adults and children. Nowadays, due to increased use of vehicles, children’s walking capacity has reduced. Therefore, it becomes our responsibility to make a conscious effort to take them outdoors and spend time close to nature.

About Kankeshwar Temple
Kankeshwar is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located about 12 km from Alibag in the Raigad district of the Konkan region. The temple sits on a high hill near a small village called Mapagaon. To reach it, one has to climb around 700 steps, as it stands at an altitude of approximately 1,200 feet above sea level.

It is believed that the temple dates back to the 12th century, from the Yadava period. The temple is very beautiful and built in the Hoysala architectural style. It has two main sections: the garbhagriha and a sabha mandap in front. The doorway of the sanctum and its frame are adorned with intricate and detailed carvings. An idol of Lord Ganesha is placed outside the entrance.

The Climb and the Surroundings
The steps are long and rectangular, allowing three people to climb comfortably side by side. Resting platforms are provided at several points where visitors can sit and relax. Surrounded by dense greenery and forest cover, the air here feels cool, fresh, and clean.
Many temples are located at higher altitudes because it is believed that as we climb, we naturally focus on our breathing. Concentrating on the breath helps one connect with the supreme energy. At that moment, the mind becomes calm and free from other thoughts. The only feeling is the desire to reach the top and have darshan of the deity.

Nature Trail Experience
Along the steps, there are small stalls selling cold drinks, fruits, and light snacks. You can enjoy this nature trail at a relaxed pace while soaking in the surrounding beauty. The sounds of birds and the rustling of leaves add to the peaceful experience. In many areas, the forest is dense, and the golden rays of sunlight filtering through the trees create a stunning view. This place also offers excellent opportunities for photography.
The temple’s carvings and decorative patterns are exquisite and worth observing closely. Near the temple, stalls sell tea, coffee, poha, and Maggi, which you can enjoy after darshan.
