50 Shades of Love: Tales of Indian Lesbian Couples

“Walking down the road alone, unknown of the destination, with half a heart in my chest, I struggled to divulge an intention. Turning to a shadow that followed me, I found my heartbeat again, the sky was now a rainbow, and I was complete within.”

There was once a community, that, like Narnia, stayed behind a curtained closet, but now the doors are wide open and the key was a fresh perception and broad brains. Today the Indian millennial generation has broken all doors and have come out and accepted their realities which they had been hiding from themselves and others for ages. Today people come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and all the other spectrum of genders and have no fear to be slashed or judged or for that matter be termed as a criminal.

Not only have we accepted this change but also have learned to find happiness in others’ progress. Here are these fearless couples who fought society and yet stayed strong as one, for, forever and always.

Seema and Sharon

The Indian descent beauty, Seema is the first Indian woman who raised a toast to her sexuality. She had been seeing a comrade from her fitness class for the past 6 years, named Sharon, an American awesomeness from California, and soon they tied their knots. They had a beautiful amalgamation of both cultures.

“We are a typical couple, at least to us. We are an interracial couple of Indian and American descent who found love at first sight,” stated Sharon in an interview.

With the wedding being intimate and bang on desi style, these two have forever claimed their names in the eternal book of love.

Sindhur and Spoorthy

This South Indian couple had faced tremendous struggles to be together. Even though they cannot legally marry, Spoorthy still poses the symbolisms of a Hindu wife. While growing up Sindhur was pretty clear of her interests in women but thought she was “unique specimen” for feeling this. Whereas Spoorthy at first rejected her proposal but later divulged her own sexuality too. Even though they are related, yet they found their road to a lovely life. She had to battle her father and hasn’t been in contact with her family for over three years. This lesbian couple celebrates their love and courage and stand bold and together forever.

Anjali Chakra and Sundas Malik

Anjali, a Hindu woman from India, and Sundas, an artist from Pakistan, based in New York, tied a knot in holy matrimony and erased the boundaries between our nations through pure love. Not only have they buzzed social media, but have become a symbol of pride for both nations.

“This experience has made us even more grateful, that we have the kind of support and protection that makes it possible for us to talk about our relationship so openly,” they said.

Bianca Maieli and Saima Ahmad

This lesbian couple, respectively from India and Pakistan looked regal on their big day, with Bianca wearing a saree and Saima, a sherwani. Bianca is a Colombian-Indian Christian woman, who met Saima, a girl from Pakistan at an event in the U.S. Sometime later, the couple decided to tie the knot in California, celebrating the union of their love, countries, and culture.

Suchandra Das and Sree Mukherjee

Suchandra and Sree met in 2015 on Facebook. Their closed friends and family arranged a wedding as per Bengali traditions, and they hope to adopt a child someday.

Manjeet Kaur and Seerat

Manjeet, a sub-inspector in Punjab police, got married to Seerat. On April 2017 in Jalandhar, it is a first-ever recorded wedding in Punjab.

Reports have also claimed that an anonymous couple in Uttar Pradesh got married in Varanasi’s Shiva temple in July 2019.

Love is love, let’s unite in humanity and not divide into sexuality.
