Malala Yousufzai and Kailash Satyarthi To Be Awarded Nobel Today

The iconic Nobel Peace Prize, even more iconic this year because of the fact that it’s been shared between India and Pakistan will be awarded today. The recipients, Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousufzai have done remarkable work in their respective fields.malala yousafzai and satyarthi kailash

Kailash Satyarthi is an anti-child labour activist and a child rights advocate. In 1980, he found the Bachpan Bachao Aandolan and has been responsible for not only protecting the rights of more than 83,000 children across 144 countries, but also for getting International Labour Organization to adopt Convention No.182 on the worst forms of child labour, which is now a guideline for governments around the world today.

Malala Yousufzai, the youngest ever Nobel peace prize recipient is an activist for female education. In her native province in Northwest Pakistan, girls were often banned from attending school by the local Taliban. As she continued t be outspoken about female education, she became a more known figure and the death threats against her increased. On October 9th, in 2012, Malala was shot by a Taliban gunman on the bus while on her way back home from school. She survived miraculously and has since become a known, international figure.

And while we wait for them to receive the award, we take a look back at some noteworthy women who have previously won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Wangari Maathai, 2004 – The first African woman to win the prize, Wangari founded the Green Belt movement, an organization that focused on planting of trees and environmental conservation while also uplifting women through the work.

Shirin Ebadi, 2003 – Founder of Defenders of Human Rights Centre in Iran, Shirin has done noteworthy work in human rights, especially those of women’s and children’s and refugee rights. She was the first Iranian to ever receive the prize

Rigoberta Menchu, 1992 – An indigenous Guatemalan woman, she has extensively worked towards protecting and publicizing the rights of Guatemala’s indigenous people during and after the Guatemalan Civil War.

Jody Williams, 1997 – An American political activist, Jody won the Nobel Peace prize for her involvement in banning anti personnel landmines and human rights, especially those of women.
