Highlighting the importance of the report, Rajesh Magow, Co-founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip, said, “With rising disposable incomes, greater exposure to global cultures, and the increasing ease of travel, more Indians are exploring both domestic and international destinations for leisure as well as business.”

“While domestic tourism remains buoyant, as noted in our previous report, our latest findings highlight the notable changes in international travel behaviour driven by macroeconomic factors that are fuelling the surge in travel among Indians. These trends present an exciting opportunity for the travel and tourism industry to innovate and cater to the evolving needs of Indian travellers.”

Key findings include:

Increased Travel Frequency: A notable 32 percent growth in Indians taking two or more international trips annually. Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Delhi lead in travel searches, with the UAE, Thailand, and the USA as top destinations. Emerging hotspots include Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Bhutan.

Emerging Destinations on the Rise: Searches for emerging locations surged by 70 percent, with Almaty and Baku seeing growth rates of 527 percent and 395 percent, respectively.

Luxury Travel Trends: There’s a 10 percent increase in searches for business class flights, with Hong Kong experiencing a 131 percent jump. Meanwhile, budget-friendly options are popular, particularly in South Asian destinations like Pokhara, Pattaya and Kuala Lumpur.

Alternative Accommodations: Searches for home stays and villas rose by 42 percent, with Bali, Dubai, and Singapore leading in popularity.

Leisure Focus: Over half (55 percent) of international trips are for leisure, with Thailand being the favourite. Urban nightlife and shopping in cities like Bangkok and Dubai attract significant interest.

Last-Minute Bookings: Close to 50 percent of international flights and 56 percent of hotel rooms are booked less than 14 days before departure, with Oman and Nepal seeing the highest last-minute bookings.

The report highlights India’s emergence as a global travel force, as travellers seek authentic experiences and personal connections worldwide.
