It’s about time we look as young as we want. Various studies have shown that exercise can indeed turn back the ageing clock at a cellular level and make you a decade younger. The evidence is in! But which is the best form of exercise? Well, now that anti ageing effects of exercise are established, scientists are not digging deeper into what form of exercises can slow down ageing or rather reverse it!
A recent study in European Heart Journal has shown that endurance training like swimming, biking, jump roping or other forms of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has greater anti-ageing benefits than resistance training (also called strength training or weight training) or doing nothing at all.
High interval training or HIIT increases teleport lengths and a higher concentration of the enzyme telomerase (involved in maintaining telomeres), which reverses the ageing process. The researchers compared the outcomes of various endurance training (such as walking and running), HIIT, weightlifting in a total of 124 adults, aged between 30 to 60 divided into four groups. The first group continued their normal routine of not exercising while the remaining three groups were made to participate in 45-minute sessions three times a week for 26 weeks.
They found that those who participated in the endurance training and HIIT had increased telomere lengths and a higher concentration of the enzyme telomerase (involved in maintaining telomeres). On the contrary, those who didn’t exercise or even those who lifted weights did not increase their teleport lengths and neither achieved a higher concentration of the enzyme telomerase.
Endurance training or HIIT is the best workout for reversing your ageing to a certain extent.
“Resistance exercise should be complementary to endurance training rather than a substitute,” says Christian Werner, the co-author of the study.
If you are looking for easy ways to incorporate HIIT workouts in your daily routine, all you need is 15 minutes in either morning or evening and you are set. No equipment is necessary. Check out our 15 minutes HIIT workouts to get going.
