People celebrate Akshaya Tritiya by performing punya karma like dana (donations), japa (recitations), snana (ritual bathing), tapa (penance) and havan (sacrifices). Other sacred activities like the upanayana (sacred thread ceremony), travelling, house construction, etc. are started on this auspicious day. People also buy valuables on this day to bring good luck to their homes. Articles made of gold are mainly purchased on this auspicious day. The fallen rates of gold have shot up the gold sales rates and people are now happily emptying their pockets. Apart from gold, people are also seen to purchase properties on Akshaya Tritiya. It may be a piece of land, or an apartment or even a shop. People also worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi on this day. Houses are decorated with flowers and new linen. People also buy new clothes on this occasion.
