Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Parasurama, Lord Vishnu’s 6th incarnation. This auspicious day is believed to bring good luck and success. People celebrate Akshaya Tritiya by performing punya karma like dana (donations), japa (recitations), snana (ritual bathing), tapa (penance) and havan (sacrifices). Other sacred activities like the upanayana (sacred thread ceremony), travelling, house construction, etc. are started on this auspicious day. People also buy valuables on this day to bring good luck to their homes. Articles made of gold are mainly purchased on this auspicious day. The fallen rates of gold have shot up the gold sales rates and people are now happily emptying their pockets. Apart from gold, people are also seen to purchase properties on Akshaya Tritiya. It may be a piece of land, or an apartment or even a shop. People also worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi on this day. Houses are decorated with flowers and new linen. People also buy new clothes on this occasion.

Food has always been part of Indian celebrations. The kitchen in a Hindu household cooks up dishes like biryani, rohu kaliya, chicken kasa, egg curry, etc for lunch and for sweets you have kalakand, kaju katri, besan barfi, mango raita, aval payasam, etc. Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated in a season when mangoes dominate the market place. And so the preparation of Aamras Puri takes place in almost every household. People love to bite into this delicacy that is prepared out of mango.
