I-Pill : What You Need to Know

i-pill

iPill is an emergency contraceptive pill and many of my friends have used it to avoid unwanted pregnancy. Hence I can safely say that it is by far one of the most effective and convenient ways to avoid pregnancy.

An emergency contraceptive is used in case of:

  1. Contraceptive failure

  2. Unprotected sex

  3. Improper use of your regular birth control method

  4. Forced sex

An iPill contains levonorgestrel as its key ingredient. Levonorgestrel is a synthetic form of progestron hormone. Increase in progestron hormone levels leads to inhibition of egg’s release from the ovary. If the egg has already been released, increased progestron prevents its fertilisation by a sperm and if the egg is fertilised, its attachment to the wombs lining is inhibited.

How to use an i-Pill:

One tablet within 24 hours (preferable) of intercourse

Pros:

  1. It’s convenient to use.

  2. Highly effective if taken within 24 hours of intercourse

  3. Relatively fewer side effects

Cons:

  1. Is less effective if the duration is more than 72 hours from the time of intercourse

  2. May cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, lower abdominal pain, feeling of breast tenderness and headache

Price:

I-PILL TAB 1.5mg x 1 – INR 100

The product is an excellent emergency oral contraceptive. However, it’s best to take precaution while having sex as these pills contain synthetic hormones and if its use is abused, it may disturb metabolic process of your body. An emergency contraceptive pill should be used, as name suggests, only in case of emergencies. Don’t make it a habit to pop pills.
