During the US President Donald Trump and Melania’s arrival at Ahmedabad airport, along with our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the media has also captured one more person standing beside the trio. The woman who is still unrecognisable to a few is none other than Gurdeep Chawla, an Indian American. Gurdeep Chawla currently works as an interpreter to US President Donald Trump. She accompanied the couple in their two days official trip to India, ensuring a smooth talk between the two nations.
Previously, Chawla has been seen working for prominent personalities – Former US President Barack Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Indian Prime Ministers such as VP Singh, Chandrashekar, Narasimha Rao, A.B. Vajpayee, I.K. Gujral, Manmohan Singh. Corporate giants like Pepsico, Pfizer, Amway, Kyani, and Herbalife also have taken her service. Facilitating communication for government, multinationals, medical agencies and courts, she is seen helping them comprehend agreements and thereby establish them effectively.
Dr Chawla started her career at the age of 21 when she found a vacancy at the Indian Parliament for an interpreter job. She had a desire to teach at her Alma matter St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, but with her vast knowledge of languages, she decided to take up the interpreter job. Later, she had to move to the United States in 1996 due to her husband’s transfer. Her career of 28 years now in this field has garnered colossal respect and credibility for her work.
When world leaders correspond, the role of an interpreter is huge-analysing and translating the speech, its exact meaning and emotion becomes imperative because although it is the leader who speaks, for others it is the voice of an interpreter that is heard. For Gurdeep Chawla, her experience working in the Indian Parliament gave her career a good start and appropriate training required for such a job.

Her Skills & Dedication
Gurdeep Chawla was commended in huge appreciation when she interpreted Narendra Modi’s first speech at the United Nations General Assembly at very short notice without any prior look at the speech.
