On January 14th, the beloved Disney show Lizzie McGuire celebrated its 20th anniversary. What better occasion than now to take a good old trip down memory lane and revisit some of the coming-of-age shows that defined a generation and kick started the careers of many who became a household name in the Industry.
Here are five such teen series that we grew up with and never fails to give us a much needed nostalgic break.
1. Lizzie McGuire (2001-2004)
Let’s start the list with the series that inspired this article. Lizzie, Gordo, and Miranda were the trio that we all wanted to be a part of; and they proved that with the right friends, you can overcome any obstacles. The series began in their middle school and alongside with Lizzie (Hilary Duff), we got to experience the drama and heartbreaks of middle school. Also, who wouldn’t fall for the animated doppelganger of Lizzie?
2. Victorious
I will vouch for this anywhere and everywhere that Victorious never had a bad song. It followed the struggles and growth of Tori (Victoria Justice) and her talented group of friends through their time in the performing arts high school, Hollywood Arts – with catchy songs for company. The series brought into limelight future superstars such as Victoria Justice, Elizabeth Gillies and of course, Ariana Grande.
3. That’s So Raven (2003-2007)
Raven is a psychic, Raven can see the future, and Raven is hilarious. Played by Raven-Symoné, the series followed the adventure and misadventures of Raven Baxter along with her friends, Chelsea and Eddie while she tries to alter the future. The series with its quirky fashion and hilarious situations will forever be remembered.
4. Wizards of Waverly Place (2007-2012)
Everyone wanted a family like the Russo’s and a magic wand like Alex’s that could be whipped out and used to overcome the slightest of obstacles. This was Selena Gomez’s breakout role, and her wit, comedic timing and charm cemented the series in our hearts. With an ample dose of magic, the series taught us about the importance friendships, family and dreams. An honourable mention must be given to the fashion in the series, which slightly embarrassing now, was all the rage then.
5. Hannah Montana (2006-2011)
Of course, this list would be incomplete without the inclusion of Hannah Montana that introduced us to the future pop powerhouse, Miley Cyrus and her incredible talent. The story of Miley Stewart, a typical tween by day and pop sensation, Hannah Montana by night, this series captured the imagination of a generation of kids and teenagers. This series was and still is one of the best known Disney shows. With her catchy songs and enviable wardrobe, Hannah Montana cemented her place in pop culture.
