After being called out on social media for racist remarks, Esha Gupta has issued a public apology. The 33 years old actress faced backlash after her comments on Nigerian footballer Alexander Iwobi.
The social media was abuzz with criticism over a snapshot of WhatsApp conversation the actress shared on her Instagram handle. The conversation went a little bit too far than just criticizing Iwobi for his performance.
In the conversation that went public, Esha’s friend called Iwobi a “gorilla” and said that “evolution stopped for him”. He even went on to say that the footballer did not change from “neanderthal to man”.
Esha replied: “Haha… I don’t know why they don’t bench him more.”
After the backlash, she was quick to delete the image but the internet had already started sharing the screenshots of her conversation. People slammed her for making racist comments inspire of being a victim of racism in the past.
Soon after that, Isha took to her social media and issued an apology on Twitter.
She said, “Guys I am sorry you thought it was racist. Was bad on my part, being a sports lover. Sorry guys, forgive the stupidity.”
She added: “It was us discussing our frustration during the game. Sorry as I didn’t realize it was directed towards racism. Laughed over the spur of the moment, which was the game’s result guys. Been a victim of racism myself before. But this is not something I am proud of. It was a fault, sorry guys”.
Esha, herself has been a victim of racism in the past. In 2017, the actress opened up about facing racist comments and told that she was often referred to as ‘Kaali’ (dark) due to her complexion.
Esha made her Bollywood debut back in 2012 with Jannat 2 and went on to feature in movies like Rustom, Baadshaho etc.
