When Aishwarya Rai stepped onto the Cannes red carpet a few days back sporting purple lipstick, the country went into a tizzy. There was a clear distinction of loving the look or hating the look. The WSL office was no different. We were equally divided on loving it or hating it but we were unanimous on one thing – applauding her for taking such a bold risk – because it is the Cannes after all. You are supposed to step it up.
Let’s rewind to a few years back. No one dared taking a risk at Cannes. Fashion at Cannes meant two things: Trying to follow what the world wore with little sense of personal style or trying to show the rest of the world a glimpse of Indian fashion. Aishwarya’s choices were no different. While there is no harm in trying to follow trends or showing the world a glimpse of our desi fashion, it was saddening to see how little bravery went into these looks. No risks, no upping the game, nothing. All because it was scary.
When you take a glimpse back into Aishwarya Rai’s outfits around before 2003 – 2007/2008 you’ll find most of them nice, but worth remembering few years down the line.
Of course, she did have her downs too.
But around 2009/2010, Aishwarya slowly started gaining more confidence and stepping it up. Nothing too risky, but you could see she was trying to get out of the “meh” zone not just with her looks, but her complete look.
And in 2014, we saw her really push the boundaries of her own style and SLAY it on the red carpet in this golden dress.
It was all about confidence. Perhaps from the years at Cannes, her own wisdom, or better stylists – whatever it was, but Aishwarya was looking confident AF! And has been ever since.
And with her latest “purple lipstick” appearance, it really shows that she’s here to up the game, take risks and isn’t afraid. I’m sure she knew that such a move would have people both, loving and hating her look, but she took the brave step anyway and that confidence, we are loving!
Keep slaying girl!
